Collection: Marten van Valckenborch
Marten van Valckenborch (1535–1612) was a Flemish Renaissance painter born in Leuven, active later in Frankfurt am Main, where he died. He specialized in landscapes and cityscapes, also producing allegorical paintings and some portraits. His early career was spent in the Spanish Netherlands.
Valckenborch's work often featured landscapes that incorporated biblical narratives. He was documented in Mechelen between 1559 and 1563, in Antwerp in 1565, and in Aachen in 1566 and 1573, before returning to Antwerp and finally migrating to Frankfurt in 1586.
In Frankfurt, Valckenborch and his extended family of artists played an important role in local artistic developments. He was the father of painters Frederik and Gillis van Valckenborch.
