Collection: Matsumura Goshun
Matsumura Goshun (1752–1811), also known as Matsumura Gekkei, was a Japanese painter of the Edo period and the founder of the Shijō school of painting. Born in Kyoto, he trained under the painter and poet Yosa Buson (1716–1784), a master of Japanese southern school painting, often referred to as Nanga or Literati painting. Goshun's early career was shaped by this tradition.
Goshun's Shijō school developed a distinctive style by synthesizing elements from various artistic traditions. It integrated the expressive brushwork and scholarly themes of the Nanga school with a more naturalistic approach, incorporating aspects of realism. This blend aimed to enhance both the artistic versatility and the expressive capacity within Japanese painting.
The Shijō school, under Goshun's leadership, became a significant force in Japanese art, establishing a new aesthetic that influenced subsequent generations of painters through its unique combination of literati ideals and observational accuracy.
