Collection: Noël Bellemare

Noël Bellemare (active 1512–1546) was a Franco-Flemish painter and illuminator. Born in the Southern Netherlands, he trained in Antwerp before relocating to Paris by 1515, where he established a workshop producing illuminated manuscripts and panel paintings. His work bridges the late Gothic tradition and the emerging Northern Renaissance, marked by precise linear detail and a refined palette.

Bellemare specialized in miniatures for Books of Hours, exemplified by excised leaves such as "The Annunciation" (Matins, Office of the Virgin) and "King David in Prayer" (c. 1530–35).

His compositions employ delicate grisaille and gold leaf, with figures rendered in elongated proportions and spatial compression characteristic of International Gothic. The Cleveland Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago hold fragments attributed to his hand, including historiated initials and marginal drolleries.
