Collection: Ofelia Marques ?
Ofélia Marques (1902–1952) was a Portuguese modernist painter, illustrator, and caricaturist. Trained in Lisbon during the early decades of the twentieth century, she emerged within the context of Portuguese modernism, where literary and visual experimentation intersected with nationalist and avant-garde currents. Her work is most closely associated with illustration, particularly for children’s literature, though her practice extended to easel painting and graphic satire.
Marques’s illustrations are marked by a delicate linearity and a restrained palette, often employing ink and gouache to render whimsical, introspective scenes of childhood. Her figures, frequently children or solitary women, exhibit a quiet expressiveness, with an emphasis on gesture and silhouette over detailed modeling.
In her paintings, she adopted a more muted, tonal approach, favoring domestic interiors and intimate portraits that reflect the influence of Symbolist and Post-Impressionist tendencies in Portuguese art of the period.
