Collection: Peter Monamy

Peter Monamy (1681–1749) was an English marine painter active in London. Born in the city, he specialized in maritime subjects, depicting naval vessels, coastal scenes, and harbor views during the late Baroque period. His work reflects the commercial and naval expansion of early 18th-century Britain, often rendered in a naturalistic style with attention to atmospheric effects and nautical detail.

Monamy’s paintings frequently portray merchant and naval ships in dynamic compositions, employing a restrained palette of blues, grays, and ochres to evoke the English Channel and Thames estuary. His technique combines precise draftsmanship with loose, expressive brushwork in skies and water, distinguishing his work from the more static conventions of earlier Dutch marine painting.

"Old East India Wharf at London Bridge" (c. 1720–1730) exemplifies his focus on London’s maritime infrastructure, while "Vessels at Sea" demonstrates his ability to convey movement and weather conditions.
