Collection: Peter Newell

Peter Sheaf Hersey Newell (1862–1924) was an American illustrator, cartoonist, and author. His work appeared in numerous periodicals and books. He was also a children's book author and illustrator, creating and illustrating new editions of many children's books.

Newell pioneered the manipulation of a book's physical form as an integral part of its narrative. This innovative approach is evident in his novelty picture books, including The Hole Book (1908) and The Slant Book (1910). He also created the comic strip The Naps of Polly Sleepyhead (1905-1906).
