Collection: Thomas Hicks

Thomas Hicks was born on October 18, 1823, in Pennsylvania. He trained under portraitist Henry Inman in New York before traveling to Europe in 1845, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and copied works by Titian and Rembrandt in Italy and the Netherlands.

Hicks specialized in portraiture and genre scenes, often depicting American domestic life with meticulous attention to textile patterns and interior furnishings. His technique combined smooth glazing with precise brushwork, evident in works like "A Friendly Warning" (1881–90), which captures a moment of moral instruction in a Victorian parlor.
