Collection: Winold Reiss

Winold Reiss (1886–1953) was a German-born American artist and graphic designer. Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, he immigrated to the United States in 1913. Upon his arrival, Reiss pursued his interest in Native Americans, a subject that would become central to his artistic output.

In 1920, Reiss traveled West, spending an extended period on the Blackfeet Reservation. Over his career, he painted more than 250 works depicting Native Americans. These paintings gained wider recognition from the 1920s to the 1950s, particularly through commissions from the Great Northern Railway, which distributed lithographed reproductions on its calendars.

Reiss also worked as an illustrator and designer, exerting a notable influence on the development of Art Deco in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. His design work included interior perspectives for murals and presentation drawings for various commercial spaces.
