Collection: Alfred Guillou

Alfred Guillou (1844 –1926) was a French painter born and active in Concarneau. He received his initial art instruction from the lithographer Théodore Le Monnier. In 1862, Guillou moved to Paris, briefly attending the Académie Suisse before joining the workshop of Alexandre Cabanel. He also studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Guillou depicted the people of the Breton port town Concarneau. During his time in Cabanel's workshop, he encountered artists such as Jules Bastien-Lepage, Fernand Cormon, and Théophile Deyrolle. His father, a fisherman and farmer, served as mayor of Concarneau for fifteen years.
