Collection: Bernardino Campi

Bernardino Campi (1522–1591) was an Italian Renaissance painter from Cremona, active in Cremona, Reggio Emilia, and Milan. He worked within an extended artistic family in Cremona, which included his distant relatives Giulio Campi and Antonio Campi. Campi is documented as a teacher of Sofonisba Anguissola and Giovanni Battista Trotti. His early training and career were rooted in the Lombardy school.

Campi's artistic style, often described as Mannerist, incorporated influences from local Cremonese painters like Camillo Boccaccino, as well as artists from neighboring regions such as Correggio, Parmigianino, and Giulio Romano. He executed religious subjects and portraiture. Campi was commissioned by Vespasiano Gonzaga to lead a team of artists, including Pietro Martire Pesenti, in the interior decoration and frescoes of the Palazzo del Giardino in Sabbioneta. He also produced several sets of copies of Titian's Eleven Caesars.

In addition to Anguissola and Trotti, Campi's pupils included Giovanni Antonio Morandi, Andrea Mainardi, and Pietro Martire Pesenti. He collaborated with Giulio Campi on frescoes for the dome of San Gismondo in Cremona.
