Collection: François Flameng
François Léopold Flameng was born in Paris on December 6, 1856, and died there on February 28, 1923. He received his initial artistic education from his father, the printmaker Léopold Flameng, and later studied under Alexandre Cabanel. Flameng established himself as a French painter, engraver, and illustrator during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In 1905, Flameng was appointed to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, where he served for a period as its president. His career included significant work as an illustrator, notably for scenes depicting World War I. During the conflict, Minister of War Alexandre Millerand designated him as an "official war painter of France."
Following the First World War, Flameng became the honorary president of the Société des peintres militaires français. He was also an honorary member of the American National Academy of Design.
