Collection: Maître François

Maître François, also identified as François Le Barbier the Elder, was an illuminator active in Paris between 1462 and 1480. Documented in Parisian records from 1455 to 1472, he worked within the late International Gothic tradition, producing illuminated manuscripts for aristocratic and ecclesiastical patrons. His work reflects the transition from medieval manuscript illumination to the early Northern Renaissance, with techniques including intricate marginalia and gold leaf application, alongside a refined, linear figural style.

Maître François’s miniatures feature precise draughtsmanship and a luminous color palette, often depicting biblical, historical, and allegorical subjects. His work on "Les Sept Articles de la Foi" (c. 1470) and "La Cité de Dieu" (mid-15th century) includes crowded, hierarchical arrangements of figures rendered in delicate grisaille and tempera.

Architectural framing and symbolic flora appear in his marginalia, aligning with contemporary Parisian workshops, while his figural elongation and expressive gestures appear in later Mannerist works.
