Collection: Hans Rottenhammer

Hans Rottenhammer (1564–1625) was a German painter. Born in Munich, he trained there until 1588 under Hans Donauer the Elder. He later moved to Italy, residing in Rome around 1593-1594 and then in Venice from approximately 1595 or 1596 until 1606. His work aligns with Mannerism and the Early Baroque style.

Rottenhammer specialized in highly finished, small-scale paintings, often executed on copper plates. His subjects frequently included mythological and religious scenes. After his return to Germany in 1606, he settled in Augsburg, also undertaking work in Munich.

Rottenhammer died in Augsburg in 1625, reportedly in poverty. His cabinet pictures on copper are held in many significant European galleries.
