Rudolf Koller (1828-1905) was a Swiss painter born and active in Zurich. He developed a realist and classicist style, also associated with the romantic Düsseldorf school of painting.
Koller gained recognition as an animal painter, often rated alongside George Stubbs, Rosa Bonheur, and Théodore Géricault. His artistic approach shared similarities with French realist painters such as Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He also executed well-composed Swiss mountain landscapes in the plein air tradition.
While his reputation primarily stemmed from his animal subjects, Koller was an innovative artist whose works, including Swiss mountain landscapes, were finely executed. His painting Gotthardpost (1873) is among his known canvases. He is rated alongside Frank Buchser and Gustave Castan as a significant Swiss painter of the 19th century.
