Collection: René Magritte
René François Ghislain Magritte (1898–1967) was a Belgian surrealist artist. Born in Lessines, he later died in Brussels. He was a painter who worked within the Surrealist movement.
Magritte's artistic practice involved depicting familiar objects in unfamiliar, unexpected contexts, which often provoked questions about the nature and boundaries of reality and representation. He created witty and thought-provoking images, frequently featuring common items such as bowler hats, apples, or windows placed in unusual or unsettling situations, thereby challenging viewers' preconceived notions of reality.
His distinctive imagery influenced subsequent art movements, including pop art, minimalist art, and conceptual art.
