This monumental portrait series depicts the Qianlong Emperor alongside his twelve imperial consorts, painted in 1736 by the Jesuit missionary and court artist Giuseppe Castiglione. Castiglione, born Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini, spent decades at the Chinese imperial court, where he became master of a unique hybrid aesthetic. His work bridged European Baroque traditions with Chinese painting principles, earning him tremendous influence and allowing him to document the magnificence of the Qianlong era with both Western precision and Eastern sensibility.
