Edwin Howland Blashfield (1848 1937) was a leading American Academic painter and muralist of the late 19th century. Known for his mastery of classical form and symbolic religious subjects, Blashfield synthesized Academic tradition with emerging Symbolist aesthetics. This work exemplifies his approach to spiritual iconography, painted during the height of his career when he was establishing himself as America's foremost academic painter. Blashfield later became director of the American Academy in Rome and a major figure in American art education.
