Collection: Abraham Janssens

Abraham Janssens I (1575–1632) was a Flemish painter born and active in Antwerp. He was a leading history painter in Flanders before Peter Paul Rubens's return from Italy in 1608. Janssens developed a classical Baroque style, influenced by his time in Rome between 1598 and 1601, and possibly again between 1602 and 1610.

His early works reflect the northern Mannerist tradition. Around 1610, Janssens integrated the dramatic lighting and vigorous modeling characteristic of Caravaggio into his practice. His mature style also drew significantly from the classicists of the Bolognese school, including the Carracci and Domenichino, shaping his large religious and mythological compositions.

After 1625, Janssens's technique became looser and his compositions more animated, reflecting the pervasive influence of Rubens on artists in Flanders during that period.
