Ernesto Icaza (1844 1906) was a Mexican painter and lithographer known for documenting rural Mexican life and customs in the nineteenth century. Though this work is dated 1911, it reflects Icaza's lifelong interest in capturing scenes of traditional vaquero culture and horsemanship. The coleadero was a roping technique central to Mexican ranching tradition, and Icaza's documentation of such scenes contributed to a broader Mexican Realist movement that valued indigenous and rural cultural practices as subjects worthy of fine art.
